Shay Given has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 5th May, that the Premier League relegation battle will definitely come down to the last day of the season.
Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Given is hoping that his old side come out on top, but he is expecting it to be a very tight battle.
As things stand, Newcastle are in 17th place, but they have both Sunderland and Norwich City breathing down their neck.
And Stoke City stopper Given said: “I hope it’ll be enough [for Newcastle]. It’s going to be so close. You just wish this had happened 10 games ago. It’s going to be so tight - definitely a last day of the season job.
“Sunderland have an extra game, and you don’t want it to be out of your hands on the last day.
“Newcastle have come in to a bit of form, and they have a great chance of staying up now.”
Newcastle had looked in serious danger, but a run of eight points from their last four matches has aided their survival bid.
The Magpies have been in impressive form recently, and they are expected to collect another three points at the weekend, when they take on rock bottom Aston Villa.
Sunderland and Norwich will be aiming to keep pace with Rafael Benitez’s side, as they do have a game in hand over the Tynesiders.
Sunderland and Norwich still have three matches left to play this term, giving them some hope that they will be able to escape the relegation zone before the end of the campaign.
