Newcastle United fans react on Twitter as Gabriel Obertan and Sylvain Marveaux are released

The French pair have been released from their contracts early.

Newcastle United agreed to terminate the contracts of French flops Gabriel Obertan and Sylvain Marveaux earlier today, with two games still remaining in the season.

The club decided to let the two players leave the club now, despite the fact the season is ongoing, rather than in the summer so they can begin a search for a new club.

It would be fair to say that neither player ever really hit the heights at Newcastle United.

Obertan, a 2011 signing from Manchester United, struggled with a strong of injuries during his time at the club.

He played just 69 times for the club in six seasons and has not featured since a 2-2 draw with Chelsea in September.

Marveaux also joined the club in 2011 from Rennes and has also battled injury problems. He had a good term on loan at Guingamp in 2014-15 but has struggled at Newcastle. He has played just 57 times for the club and has not featured for Newcastle since March 2014.

Whilst the majority of Newcastle fans will not be too sad to see the back of the French pair most have wished them well in their futures away from St James’ Park…
