Arsenal v Manchester City key for West Ham and top four, says Cottee

West Ham are currently sixth in the table and eyeing Champions League football.

Arsenal’s clash with Manchester City is key to West Ham’s hopes of finishing in the top four, Tony Cottee has told Sky Sports, broadcast May 5th.

The two sides meet on Sunday in a game that could be crucial to deciding the top four places this season.

Both sides are determined to finish third in the table and avoid a potentially tricky Champions League play-off for next season.

The pressure is firmly upon City as both West Ham and Manchester United are breathing down their necks in fifth and sixth.

The Hammers are currently sixth and five points behind Manuel Pellegrini’s side, but crucially have a game in hand, and Cottee says that upcoming game is key to their hopes of a top four finish.

“I’ve already mentioned the key games, it’s Arsenal v Manchester City,” he told Sky Sports.

“Arsenal need a result, hopefully if they get the win then it opens the door for West Ham. What a position for my old club to be in.”

“If they can win their last three games and Arsenal win at Man City, then West Ham are guaranteed Champions League football. If they finish in any European place it’s a fantastic season.”

While a top four place is currently in their grasp, Cottee is right to suggest that any form of European qualification would represent a fantastic season.

Many had worried that they would struggle under Slaven Bilic, but instead they have flourished and competed at the top end of the table.

The future is looking bright and even Europa League football would be warmly welcomed at the Olympic Stadium next year.
