Alan Shearer discusses what Leicester title win proves above all

Premier League

Alan Shearer has revealed what he believes Leicester City's Premier League title win proves above all.

Claudio Ranieri's Foxes sealed the most remarkable of title triumphs when their nearest challengers Tottenham Hotspur were held to a 2-2 draw by Chelsea on Monday night.

It has been one long party in Leicester ever since as the sporting world marveled at the astonishing achievement.

The newly crowned champions were 5,000/1 shots at the start of this season and their success has proved bookmakers, pundits and rival supporters wrong.

'They've stuck two fingers up'

But Shearer told Coral what it proves more than anything is that a number of clubs were wrong to turn their back on the men behind Leicester's fairytale.

"For a lot of these Leicester players, they have all been rejected at some stage of their careers," Shearer told Coral.

"They have now just stuck two fingers up to everyone who has rejected them.

"Ranieri came in and many people ridiculed the appointment. He was one of the favourites for the sack. When you put all that into perspective, you have the most surprising story in English football history."

Shearer makes a salient point.

Cast-offs, rejects and bargain buys

The Foxes were made up of a team of cast-offs and bargain buys who, as the bookmakers' odds show, were written off before the season had started.

Led by a manager who had been sacked in five of his previous jobs, the Midlands side's squad of rejects and relative unknowns have become household names.

From former non-league striker Jamie Vardy to the likes of Danny Simpson, Danny Drinkwater and Marc Albrighton the club's recruitment focused on players deemed surplus to requirements elsewhere.

In fact as many as 14 players in the Leicester squad were cast-offs at former clubs.
