The Magpies are battling it out for survival with Sunderland and Norwich City.
The Magpies have endured a difficult campaign, struggling at the bottom end of the table under Steve McClaren for much of the season.
Things have picked up since he was replaced by Rafa Benitez, with them moving out of the bottom three on Saturday, as they mount a late survival bid under the Spaniard.
The club had been hoping to compete at the other end of the table as they spent well in both transfer windows, but Wijnaldum claims he knew it could be difficult before he joined.
“Before I signed, I knew it could be difficult because the team had a few difficult seasons,” he told the Daily Star.
“But when you hear the atmosphere like we got on Saturday, that’s what I always hoped we would get and one of the reasons I came.
“It has been tough but it is possible to enjoy it though I won’t be completely happy until it is the end of the season and we are safe.”
If the Magpies are to survive this season, they will need their rivals to continue to struggle to pick up points.
Norwich look like sliding back into the Championship at present, while on the other hand Sunderland’s performances have been good but have not seen them picking up wins.
With Sam Allardyce’s side enjoying a game in hand that could prove crucial, Newcastle will be hoping that their failure to pick up wins continues to boost their survival chances.
