Report: Championship trio join race for Southend United star

Molineux - Wolves - Billy Wright Stand

Wolverhampton Wanderers, Ipswich Town and Huddersfield Town are all keen on Shrimpers midfielder Jack Payne, a report claims.

Wolverhampton Wanderers, Ipswich Town and Huddersfield Town have entered the race to sign Southend United midfielder Jack Payne, Echo News reports.

The attacking midfielder has scored nine goals in 29 appearances this season but was left out of Phil Brown's latest squad with the Shrimpers resigned to losing him, along with fellow academy graduate Daniel Bentley, next month.

According to HITC sources, Dutch side Sparta Rotterdam are also keen on Payne, who like Bentley is out of contract at Roots Hall.

However, a move to the Championship may appeal to the 21-year-old.

Ipswich, which is little over an hour's drive from the Essex town, hold the geographical advantage, though Wolves have gained a reputation for developing lower league talents - notably the England Under-21 defender Kortney Hause.

Huddersfield may also be an attractive proposition for Payne, with head coach David Wagner having made two signings already as he looks to compete at the top end of the division next term.

Left-footed Payne, who is 5ft 5in tall, has appeared in central midfield, on the left and up front this season, as well as in his favoured number 10 role.
