HITC Sport understands Southend star emerges as target for Dutch club.
Southend United midfielder Jack Payne has emerged as a shock target for Dutch club Sparta Rotterdam, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.
Attacking midfielder Payne has impressed for Southend in League One this season, scoring nine goals in 34 games for the Shrimpers.
Payne is out of contract at Southend this summer and a new deal has yet to be agreed with talks dragging on for several weeks.
The news has alerted a number of clubs with several English sides keeping tabs on Payne's situation as they weigh up a move for the 21-year-old on a free transfer.
However, Sparta Rotterdam have now joined the chase for the former Tottenham youngster as they plan for next season in the Eredivisie.
Sparta won promotion back to the Dutch top flight by winning the Eerste Divisie this season and their scouts have been alerted to the performances of Payne as they look to bolster their squad for next term.
Southend are reluctant to lose Payne this summer, but expect the midfielder to have offers from other clubs when his contract expires in a few months.
