Tottenham Hotspur’s failure to win against London rivals Chelsea away from home at Stamford Bridge on Monday evening means that Leicester have clinched the championship with two games to spare.
It is one of the greatest achievements in sporting history and arguably the biggest ever in English football.
Leicester were fighting for survival in the Premier League last season, but under manager Claudio Ranieri this season, the Foxes have won what is the world’s most popular domestic league.
Townsend, who joined Newcastle from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window, has taken to Twitter to congratulate Leicester on their extraordinary success.
Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi, Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, West Ham United striker Andy Carroll, Sunderland’s Fabio Borini, Liverpool’s Mario Balotelli (currently on loan at AC Milan), Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech, Everton duo Gerard Deulofeu and Joel Robles, Crystal Palace’s Emmanuel Adebayor, and West Bromwich Albion’s Gareth McAuley have all taken to Twitter to congratulate Leicester.
