Arsenal have been linked with Bayern Munich duo Robert Lewandowski and Mehdi Benatia.

According to the Daily Star, Arsenal are keen on signing Bayern Munich duo Robert Lewandowski and Mehdi Benatia with the club set to spend big this summer in a bid to finally win the title.

The Gunners have experienced a disappointing Premier League campaign, falling way short of expectations and allowing themselves to be pipped to the title by both Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

Big signings are needed for Arsene Wenger to take the club to the next level, though names such as Robert Lewandowski remains highly unlikely and seemingly unrealistic on more than one account.

However, his teammate Mehdi Benatia could be available this summer, and he is exactly the sort of player which Arsenal need to partner leading centre-back Laurent Koscielny in the heart of defence.

With Per Mertesacker ageing and on the decline, the North London club have had to make do with inexperienced pair Gabriel Paulista and Calum Chambers and both have proven inadequate.

Benatia is a renowned top defender possessing strength, positional awareness and ability on the ball.

With Bild reporting Bayern’s likely move for Borussia Dortmund skipper Mats Hummels this summer, Benatia is likely to become available and a number of clubs will see him as an ideal option.

The 29-year-old is entering the prime of his career, he has enjoyed stints in France, Italy and Germany and it’s unlikely he would pass up the opportunity to have a spell in the Premier League.

Arsenal have the finances to entice the Morocco international into moving to the Emirates, and the guarantee of first-team football would surely add as an extra incentive to join Wenger’s side.
