The Belgian defender does not see the similarities.
Plenty of players have been credited with having a pivotal impact on Tottenham Hotspur’s upturn in fortune this term.
One such player has been Toby Alderweireld.
The Belgian was signed from Atletico Madrid in the summer after a fantastic spell on loan at Southampton last season.
The former Ajax youngster has established himself as a vital member of the Spur first-team and it is not just his defensive attributes that have seen him earn so much credit.
He can be a bullying and strong central defender but also has a turn of pace and a wonderful pass that makes him a top talent.
It was these aspects of his game that saw him compared to a former Manchester United player in his early career.
"At Ajax, Frank de Boer described me at one point as the new Jaap Stam.
“A nice compliment, but you can’t compare two players – everyone is different.
“I’m a different kind of defender than Stam.
“When he ended his career at Ajax, I got my chance. Three months later I made my debut in a friendly game against Internazionale.”
Of course the Dutchman played at Ajax as the Belgian defender was coming through the youth system so when he did eventually make his breakthrough the Dutch legend was still a memorable figure at the club.
The pair may indeed have their similarities, and differences, but Alderweireld will hope to have a similar impact in English football.
The Spurs star will hope to emulate the success of Stam, who won three Premier League medals, the FA Cup and Champions League during his time at Manchester United, at White Hart Lane.
