The pair were key to the win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.
The Magpies were 1-0 winners over former manager Alan Pardew’s side on Saturday, with the three points proving taking them out of the bottom three.
It was a tight affair though, and nearly disastrous for them as the Eagles were handed a penalty late on to draw the two sides level.
Darlow stepped up to deny former star Yohan Cabaye though, and t Merson was keen to praise him for what he felt was an outstanding display.
“He was outstanding,” he told Soccer Saturday.
“He didn’t do anything wrong. I remember the game at West Brom where he was probably at fault for the goal, but he paid Newcastle back today.”
“I am well pleased for him, you make one mistake as a goalkeeper and you’ve had it, but today he had a great game.”
The former midfielder was also keen to praise Andros Townsend after he proved to be the difference in the game.
The winger was impressive throughout the game and provided its defining moment as he stepped up to score a superb free kick and hand his side victory.
It was the latest big moment he has provided in recent weeks, following his move from Tottenham Hotspur in January, and Merson says he is exactly the type of player that the club needs.
“The one thing I do like about him, he always gets on the ball,” he added.
“Some of his passing in the first half wasn’t great, he giving the ball away cheaply, but he always gets on it. That’s what you need at Newcastle, you need big players.”
