The Gunners had looked to be title contenders this season, as they started strongly and topped the table at the beginning of 2016.
Instead, the year has been disastrous for them to date as they have struggled to keep up with Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City.
Arsenal are now scrambling to secure a top four place, preferably third to avoid a Champions League play-off. That has led to increased pressure on manager Arsene Wenger and Merson has criticised him.
“He’s brainwashing the players,” he told Soccer Saturday. “Santi Cazorla has been saying they’ve got a great mentality, how have they got a great mentality? They got beat by Swansea reserve team at home.
“Every team loses a game, but it’s the way they lose. It’s the same way they chase games. Someone has got to step in upstairs and stop making money, forget the money and go and sign someone.”
There is no denying that Arsenal must now spend significant money this summer to turn things around at the club.
All of their rivals will surely be significantly improving this summer, as Chelsea and Manchester City both welcome new managers, Tottenham look to kick on and even Liverpool plan to build under Jurgen Klopp.
That could see Arsenal struggling for a top four place, never mind a title challenge next season, and improving the current crop must surely be a priority.
