Andros Townsend should be considered for England, says Danny Murphy

The winger scored Newcastle United's winning goal in the 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Newcastle United star Andros Townsend should be considered by England for Euro 2016, Danny Murphy has told BBC Match of the Day, broadcast April 30th.

The winger was once again the difference for the Magpies on Saturday afternoon as his superb free kick saw his side secure a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

That goal, and subsequent three points, took them out of the relegation zone and provided a huge boost to their hopes of avoiding relegation this season.

It is the latest of a series of impressive performances by the former Tottenham Hotspur man in recent weeks, and Murphy says he should be considered for Euro 2016 if Theo Walcott and Raheem Sterling are in the frame.

“He’s had some really good games for Roy Hodgson,” he told Match of the Day.

“I think if your looking at the likes of Theo Walcott and Raheem Sterling, then there’s an argument for Andros Townsend. He’s playing every week, he’s a goal threat and he’s certainly playing better than the other two at the moment.”

Given how Hodgson has turned to Townsend in the past, it would not be surprising to find himself in contention for England this summer.

He has certainly proven to be the difference for Newcastle United in recent weeks, having finally found his feet since moving in January.

This form though, comes after a long time doing very little for Spurs and much like the Magpies have left it late to avoid relegation, he may have left it too late to make it into the Euro 2016 squad.
