The talented playmaker joined the Hammers from Marseille last summer in a deal which was frowned upon by a number of journalists back in his native France.
Many couldn’t quite understand why Payet would trade a club fighting for a Champions League spot for a West Ham side who finished 12th in the Premier League last season.
Yet, Payet’s switch has been justified as West Ham’s fabulous 3-0 win over West Bromwich Albion momentarily moves the club up to fifth in the league table, five points off the top four.
The France international was instrumental in Slaven Bilic’s side’s impressive win over the Baggies, and his first-half assist reached a landmark which hasn’t been achieved since the Paolo Di Canio days.
10 – Dimitri Payet is the first West Ham player to provide 10+ assists in a PL season since Paolo Di Canio (13 in 1999/00). Wizard.— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) 30 de abril de 2016
As shown by Opta, Payet became the first West Ham player for over 15 years to reach double figures in assists over the course of the Premier League campaign as he assisted Cheikhou Kouyate’s opener.
The 29-year-old isn’t just an assist king for his side, he is also a real crowd-pleaser with his eccentric skills but most importantly he is a match-winner on, also grabbing nine goals this season.
Payet is a shoe-in to win the club’s Player of the Year award and he is the ideal player to lead the Hammers into a new and exciting era in the Olympic Stadium next season.
