Leicester currently lead Spurs by seven points in the table with only three games remaining, and they will be named Premier League champions if they defeat Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
It has been a heroic effort from Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City side, and regardless of whether they get the job done, everyone will be eager to see whether they can repeat their antics next season.
Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson feels the Foxes will retain their best players and do well, but suggests Tottenham will get the better of them next term, calling the North London club the best team in the Premier League.
“You’d like to think it’s not one of those things where they win the league but finish 15th the next season. I don’t think it’s a fluke. And I think Leicester will be able to keep hold of their best players,” Merson wrote.
“But next season Spurs will have the better chance of winning the title. I still think they are the best team in the league right now. You would bet your house on them finishing above Leicester next season.”
Tottenham have one of the youngest squads in the league, and boss Mauricio Pochettino will be confident his players will continue to develop. Moreover, the North London side may be in a better position to attract bigger name players over the summer, with the offer of Champions League football surely a further incentive for elite players to join their ranks.
