Alan Shearer offers instant reaction to Newcastle's victory, praises three brilliant players

Newcastle beat Crystal Palace 1-0 this afternoon to boost their survival hopes.

Newcastle United have boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation with a vital 1-0 home win over Crystal Palace this afternoon.

The Magpies went into the match off the back of three unbeaten games, after beating Swansea and drawing with Manchester City and Liverpool - and they have now moved out of the bottom three today.

After another subdued first half from Newcastle, Rafael Benitez's men improved in the second half, and Andros Townsend grabbed the only goal of the game with a fine free kick - but the drama didn't end there.

Moussa Sissoko then conceded a penalty for handball, and with Newcastle fans expecting the worst as former Magpies star Yohan Cabaye stepped up, goalkeeper Karl Darlow saved the penalty to not only win the game but also keep a valuable clean sheet.

Now one point clear of the relegation zone, Newcastle have given themselves a real fighting chance of survival, and now face already-relegated Aston Villa next, with a great chance to move further clear.

Almost instantly after the game, Newcastle legend Alan Shearer took to Twitter to claim it was a 'great win', and was already looking ahead to next week's game against Villa.

Shearer also praised goalkeeper Darlow, winger Townsend and defender Jamaal Lascelles as 'brilliant' after the trio starred in today's vital win for Newcastle.
