The Reds are 1-0 down after a late goal in the first leg on Thursday evening.
Liverpool cannot afford a repeat to the start they had against Borussia Dortmund in the second leg against Villarreal, John Hartson has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show, broadcast on talkSPORT April 29th.
The Reds travelled to Spain on Thursday evening for the first leg of their Europa League semi final clash.
In a tight affair, it appeared they would be leaving with a 0-0 draw before a last minute goal from Adrian Lopez gave Marcelino’s side a narrow lead to take to Anfield.
The tie is still finely balanced, and Hartson has insisted they cannot afford a similar to start to the one they had against Dortmund in the last round in which they found themselves two goals down after nine minutes.
“They’ll have to avoid a similar start to what they got against Dortmund,” he told talkSPORT.
“There’s no way they can go 2-0 down after 11 minutes against Villarreal. In so many ways it’s a good that happened because they’ll learn from it. They managed to get out of jail that night.”
“They cannot start like that, they will be aware of that. Even one goal means they’ve got to go and score three and I can see them conceding.”
If Liverpool are to secure their progression to the final at Anfield, they will need to return Daniel Sturridge to the first team line up.
The striker was left sat on the bench in Spain, with Roberto Firmino starting up front, but the experiment was not a successful one as the Reds lacked a cutting edge throughout.
With them now in need of goals though, it would be amiss to leave him sat on the bench again for the second leg next week
