Roberto Martinez could manage Barcelona, believes Paul Merson

Everton manager Roberto Martinez could manage Barcelona, Paul Merson has told Sky Sports News.

The Blues boss is under increasing pressure at Goodison Park with his side languishing at the wrong end of the table.

They currently sit 11th in the table and look unlikely to finish in the top ten this season for a second successive campaign, which is an unacceptable position for many given the strength of the squad.

The blame has been firmly put on Martinez, with some Everton fans displaying banners calling for their manager to be sacked.

Merson though, claims that their current boss could actually manage La Liga giants Barcelona.

“He doesn’t really play the Premier League way,” he told Sky Sports.

“He likes them to pass it out from the back, he could manage Barcelona if I’m being honest . He plays that kind of way. I just think the Everton fans get frustrated with that.”

“He’s been caught up in it, wanting to play the Spanish way. I’ve seen Everton a lot of times and they make 50 passes and haven’t gone over they halfway line. That’s been his downfall in my opinion.”

There is no denying that Everton have underachieved this season given the quality they have available in their squad.

The style certainly has been a major point of anger for the fans, but a bigger problem has been the perceived lack of a Plan B from their side, who have often struggled to break down teams.

That comes from Martinez’s desire to play a certain style of football and perhaps at least an attempt to adapt this could have seen him given more time by the Everton faithful.
