Lee Clark has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 29th April, that he believes Rafael Benitez will be able to attract top players to Newcastle United, if he stays on as manager.
The Spaniard’s future at Newcastle remains in the balance, as the Tynesiders battle against relegation from the Premier League.
Benitez has a break clause in his contract which means that he is free to leave Newcastle, if they do go down this season.
However, it is widely anticipated that he will remain at St. James’ Park if they retain their Premier League status.
And Clark believes that if Newcastle can stay up this season, it could be the start of a very exciting future for the club he used to represent, during his playing days.
“We believe that he wouldn’t have come unless he got the guarantees that he wanted on the recruitment side,” the current Kilmarnock boss said.
“He can attract the players. It’s difficult at times for the North East clubs because of where they’re situated, but if we’ve got Benitez that’s going to help the club to attract the top end players, rather than the middle to bottom tier players.”
Benitez is yet to have a transfer window at Newcastle, and he has inherited the squad left from Steve McClaren’s time in charge.
The former Real Madrid man has already dropped some big names from his starting line-up, and his impact his been clear.
Newcastle have taken five points from their last three matches, and they are now looking like a much improved side, but they still remain in 19th place in the Premier League table.
Newcastle’s final three matches this season come against Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur.
