Villarreal beat Liverpool 1-0 in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final tie at El Madrigal.

Liverpool were left with work to do ahead of the second leg of their Europa League semi-final tie with Villarreal at El Madrigal, after a stoppage time Adrian Lopez goal gave the Spaniard's a narrow first leg advantage.

Roberto Firmino was given the nod ahead of Daniel Sturridge - who didn't feature at all last night - as manager Jurgen Klopp looked to keep things tight in the first leg ahead of a showdown at Anfield next week.

It was a fairly uneventful night. Simon Mignolet pulled off a couple of fine saves, both sides hit the post, a bad offside call went against Adam Lallana and the visitors but Alberto Moreno is probably waking up this morning thinking this tie could have been so different if he either buried his opportunity late on - or squared the ball to Jordon Ibe.

Jurgen Klopp issued a warning shot to the victors on the night, saying the tie is not over yet as Villarreal travel to Anfield next week in the hope they can secure the vital away goal that could leave Liverpool with a mountain to climb.
