Former Bayern Munich midfielder Olaf Thon has weighed in on Liverpool's reported pursuit of Mario Gotze, suggesting they already have a superior player.
Thon is impressed with Brazilian attacker Philippe Coutinho, and believes he is a more complete player than the German 2014 World Cup hero.
Speaking to television channel Sport 1, Thon said: "Nothing against Mario Götze, he is a super player. But when I see Coutinho, then Götze, there is something missing."
He went onto add that Coutinho was more flexible than Gotze, and wants the German to add to his game.
Thon earned 52 caps for Germany and won four Bundesliga titles with Bayern, before playing the last eight years of his career with Schalke and retiring in 2002.
The Guardian reported earlier this month that Liverpool were confident of signing Gotze this summer, due to manager Jurgen Klopp's previous working relationship with the attacker.
Gotze has been on the fringes at Bayern Munich this season, making just nine starts, scoring once and providing four assists.
Coutinho, who like Gotze is 23-year-old, by contrast has scored eight league goals and provided five assists from 21 starts for Liverpool.
