Barry Bannan explains why he wears number 41 for Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday 2

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan has enjoyed a great debut campaign for the club.

Barry Bannan has told Sky Sports that he was asked by Sheffield Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri to wear the number 41 this season.

Chansiri’s lucky number is 41, and he selected Bannan as the player he wanted to wear the shirt.

The number is not a commonly seen one in English football, but Bannan is pleased about how it has worked out so far.

“It's number 41 but it was the chairman here who asked me to take that apparently,” the Scottish international midfielder said.

“In his country it's a lucky number for him apparently. For me I was only 25 I think when I came. Because I had that at other places and I liked it but the chairman wanted me to have it and he said it would be a lucky number for me - you'll have to ask him - but it has been lucky so far.”

Bannan was brought to Wednesday from Crystal Palace last summer, and he has made a great impression at Hillsborough.

The energetic midfielder has been a key part of Carlos Carvalhal’s side as they have pushed for the play offs.

Bannan has made 38 appearances for Wednesday so far this term, scoring on two occasions.

Wednesday are currently in sixth place in the Championship table, and one win from their remaining two fixtures would secure their spot in the promotion deciding contests.

Wednesday’s last two matches in the regular Championship season come against Cardiff City and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
