Thomas Hitzlsperger has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show on TalkSPORT, which was broadcast on the morning of 28th April, that Aston Villa need a change of owner if they are to be successful again.
Villa have already been making changes at boardroom level, and they are expected to alter their playing squad considerably during the summer transfer window.
However, Hitzlsperger claims that his former side’s fortunes will not change for the better until Randy Lerner sells the club
“This season has been really depressing,” Hitzlsperger said. “I’ve followed it closely, and it’s inevitable that a new owner comes in and that a takeover will happen.
“You can talk about a new manager and new players, but first of all a new owner needs to come in and get the fans back on board. Hopefully they’ll be back in the Premier League as soon as possible.
“It’s been tough. Not just this season, but seasons before. You could see it coming.”
Lerner has been trying to sell Villa for some time, but so far no buyer has taken the Midlands club off his hands.
There are reports in the Telegraph suggesting that a Chinese consortium could be launching a takeover bid in the coming weeks, though.
Villa are also looking to appoint a new manager, as they look to bounce back from their first ever Premier League relegation.
The Claret and Blues currently have Eric Black in temporary charge, but he is expected to be replaced at the end of the current campaign.
At the moment, Nigel Pearson is the front runner to land the Villa job on a permanent basis with the bookies.
