The defender is facing a long term ban after a positive drugs test.
The defender was enjoying a strong season for the Reds, having established himself as a first team regular in the heart of their defence.
That has been curtailed though, as a positive drugs test by UEFA has led to a 30 day suspension from them after they formally opened proceedings.
Before then he had been handed an indefinite ban by the club as situation was dealt with, meaning his season is all but over.
Indeed, he could be set for an even longer ban should he be found guilty and Enrique admits they are annoyed at him as his absence will affect the team.
“His absence will affect us,” he told Marca.
“Sakho is a key piece of our team. We’re annoyed for him because he’s a great footballer and a great friend. He made a mistake and faces punishment. Personally, I think it was silly. These things happen.”
It will be interesting to see how Sakho’s ban affects Liverpool’s end to the season as they look to secure a place in the top six.
More importantly, it is a major dent to their hopes of winning the Europa League, with the Frenchman having played a big role in their progress to the semi finals. Last night they slipped to a 1-0 first leg loss to Villarreal.
Should he be handed a long-term ban also, it is surely going to affect the club’s transfer plans too given the defence was likely to be a major focal point for improvement before this issue arose.
