But the size of Wednesday's task pales in comparison to the one they faced this very day four years ago.
Having been five points behind Sheffield United ahead of the two teams' Hillsborough encounter in late February - and with two fewer games remaining - an almost flawless run of form saw the Owls climb to within two points of their fierce local rivals heading into the League One season's penultimate weekend.
United, seemingly, held the upper hand. Danny Wilson's men had a home fixture against Stevenage on the Saturday tea time, while Wednesday had a difficult trip to Brentford to overcome earlier that afternoon.
The Blades' promotion, many thought, would be rubber-stamped with a game to spare. Instead, it was Dave Jones' Wednesday who occupied second place ahead of their season finale against Wycombe Wanderers - courtesy of Miguel Llera's headed winner at Griffin Park.
Wednesday went on to beat the Chairboys 2-0 the following weekend, while United drew both their remaining fixtures and lost the play-off final to Huddersfield Town on penalties.
Little has been heard of them since.
In the meantime, Owls fans have been reliving #MindTheGap day on Twitter...
