The Foxes can clinch the league with a win against Manchester United this weekend at Old Trafford.
If they lose, they can still be crowned champions if Tottenham lose any of their remaining three games, or if Leicester beat either of Everton or Chelsea in their subsequent matches.
“Leicester are ever closer to the Premier League title,” Del Piero wrote in an editorial for Sky evening news, reported by Eurosport.
“I really hope it ends the way we all hope it will, because this really is something to tell our grandchildren, it shows that nothing is impossible in sport.”
Del Piero played a key role in Italy's 2006 World Cup winning team, and made more than 500 appearances for Juventus during his career, winning multiple titles.
Leicester's achievement would be unlike anything seen in England's top flight for years, and their success is clearly being felt and noticed around Europe, where the same old sides frequently dominate the big leagues.
Del Piero played under Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri between 2007 and 2009.
