CSKA Moscow coach admits wanting Seydou Doumbia back at the club

The Newcastle United loanee has not impressed since his switch to the North-East.

Newcastle United’s attempts to stay in the Premier League saw them make a move for Seydou Doumbia in the winter transfer window.

The former CSKA Moscow forward has struggled for form at his Italian club Roma and was clearly hopeful he could find form and goals at Newcastle after making the temporary switch.

Unfortunately, that has not been the case.

The Ivorian has managed to play just three times for Newcastle since his arrival and has not featured since March. It now looks as if he will play no further part in the club’s hunt for Premier League survival.

At the weekend he went to visit former club CSKA Moscow as they took in Dynamo Moscow and after the game CSKA head coach Leonid Slutsky admitted his desire to bring him back to the club. The Chronicle quote him as stating:

“He just came here to say hello to his team-mates, with whom he spent the best years of his career.

“If it were possible to do a deal then we’d be doing it now, in the dressing room.”

Newcastle, even if they had survived their relegation battle, would surely have been unlikely to make a move for the Ivorian on a permanent deal this summer.

He has struggled to settle in anywhere apart from his beloved CSKA and surely his best option in the summer would be to head back to the Arena Khimki.
