The Villans are set to be busy in the summer transfer window.
The Villans will be playing in the second tier next season, after a dismal campaign saw their relegation confirmed against Manchester United two weeks ago.
They are currently without a manager, having sacked Remi Garde last month following his short and unsuccessful spell in charge.
Once a new boss is secured a major summer overhaul of the squad is expected given how poorly they have performed this season. And Keown says Villa should look to secure players with character and personality to be successful.
"I think it's important that you have that academy influence in your squad. That's a must,” he told avfc.uk.
"Then it's adding the right kind of players. They need a certain type of player to get out of the Championship.
"If it is the Championship, you need strong players - it's very tough. It's a battle. You need players with character and personality and a little bit of knowhow in that division."
There is no denying that Villa have plenty of work to do in the summer transfer window as they seek to make an immediate return to the Premier League.
Much is likely to rest on how many of the current players they can sell given the majority have been deemed not good enough.
Selling them is likely to be a tough ask though, with potential buyers unlikely to have been impressed with the performance levels they have shown so far.
