Rafael Benitez delighted with Kevin Mbabu's return for Newcastle United

Kevin Mbabu has not played for Newcastle United since January.

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has told the Shields Gazette that Kevin Mbabu’s return is good news for the squad.

Mbabu has been out with injury since January, but he came back into the Magpies’ squad for their match against Liverpool at Anfield last weekend.

The youngster was on the bench, as Newcastle came back from 2-0 down to claim a point on Merseyside.

Benitez has now hinted that Mbabu could be involved before the end of the season, and he also has Yoan Gouffran coming back to fitness.

“With Mbabu coming back, that is good news. Gouffran is closer, so we have some players getting closer,” the Spanish boss said.

“At least we have Mbabu, who is a defender and can help with the defender crisis.”

Mbabu could be required to play before the end of the season, as Newcastle still have Steven Taylor and Daryl Janmaat on the treatment table.

The 21-year-old has previously impressed when given chances in Newcastle’s first-team, and he will be required to make a big impact if he does come in before the end of the campaign.

Newcastle have just three games remaining to make it out of trouble, and they are currently one point adrift of safety.

Benitez’s men have matches against Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur still to play.
