Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp makes interesting claims about his style of play

Klopp Scouse Lesson

Klopp has a reputation for a good pressing game or 'heavy metal' football, but he mentions one other aspect to their play.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has made a couple of claims about his side's style of play despite the reputation of his own footballing methodology.

Klopp recalled a time he referred to his football as heavy metal, while much of the focus of the German's style is on the pressing off the ball, but Klopp suggests there are other aspects to his play.

He told UEFA.com: "We are a ball possession team, but nobody realises it because my image is pressing and counter-pressing.

"When I was younger, I called it things like 'heavy metal football'. I have no idea any more why I said that. But I do like the spectacular. When I am in a room with people I try to make sure the atmosphere is not worse when I am there. When I am involved in a game, I try to help ensure it is more enjoyable than when I am not involved."

Premier League average possession percentage since Jurgen Klopp was appointed Liverpool manager:

Possession PercentageAppearances
Arsenal 58% 27
Liverpool 58% 26
Tottenham 57% 27
Man Utd 56% 26
Man City 56% 27
Chelsea 55% 26

If you look at the table above detailing the average possession percentage among the sides since Klopp took over, the German certainly has strengthened his case that his side are a 'ball possession team' - as they average the same amount as possession as Arsenal at the top of the statistics and they are a side that is renowned for their possession based football.

Klopp has certainly given Liverpool fans a taste of the spectacular with some of the side's performances this season, even if they are a work in progress. Although there are some deficiencies, the fans seem to be enjoying the ride the team is offering right now.
