As far as Everton fans are concerned, things have rarely been worse.
It's almost two months since they last recorded a league victory, their last hope of silverware died on Saturday and the manager they all seem to want gone remains in place (for the time being at least).
The 18-year-old had been on fire for David Unsworth's side in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League, scoring six goals in 12 appearances.
And he took that tally to nine in 13 after last night's treble against Leicester City at Goodison Park.
Dowell, who has been capped three times by England's Under-18s, opened the scoring with a sublime chip from distance before doubling the Toffees' lead from the edge of the box with 26 minutes played.
Leicester equalised ahead of the break but Dowell sealed the points for the hosts with another fabulous effort, curled into the top corner from 20 yards out.
Couldn't get down last night? Well fear not...
