Charlie Nicholas has told Sky Sports that Arsenal should sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.
The former Arsenal forward believes that defence is an issue for the Gunners that needs to sorted in the summer.
"When Arsene Wenger starts planning for next season, if he is there, which I think he will be, I would rather he addressed the defensive issues than bought a striker," Nicholas told Sky Sports.
"If I had a position to buy right now and a choice between a centre-forward and Raphael Varane, my priority would be Varane.”
Varane has been on the books of Spanish giants Madrid since 2011 and has a contract until June 2020.
The France international defender is a very talented player, but the 23-year-old is not guaranteed a place in Los Blancos’ starting lineup.
The centre-back has featured in 24 La Liga matches for Madrid so far this season, creating one chance in the process.
The former Lens man has a pass accuracy of 88% and a shot accuracy of 18%, and has won 46 headers, eight dribbles and 23 tackles.
Nicholas has also suggested that Arsenal signing Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli will not help them in winning major trophies if they keep on conceding goals.
"The hardest position to fill is the centre-forward but you've got to sort the basics first and I don't think it needs to be a superstar striker because of the chances they create,” the former Scotland international told Sky Sports.
“Giroud has a decent scoring record for the club and he's not a superstar. If they get Gonzalo Higuain in for say £50m and keep conceding two or three goals then they still won't win anything.”
Higuain, a former Madrid striker, has scored 30 goals and created 46 chances in 32 Serie A appearances for Napoli so far this season.
