Jermaine Jenas said on The Monday Night Club show on BBC 5 live Sport on Monday evening (broadcast from 7pm, April 25) that West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino would not be a good fit for Tottenham Hotspur.
Tottenham were interested in signing Berahino from West Brom in the summer of 2015, with the Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace revealing a bid from the North London outfit on the club’s official website.
Former Spurs midfielder Jenas believes that head coach Mauricio Pochettino would not make a move for the 22-year-old in the summer transfer window.
“Will Pochettino still want him here?” said the former Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United star on The Monday Night Club show on BBC 5 live Sport on Monday evening (broadcast from 7pm, April 25). “I am not sure.
"I always feel that the person that needs to come and support Harry Kane as a striker, he needs to be of a certain attitude and type.
“Berahino has got the ability to do it, but it needs to be somebody that's prepared to sit on the bench and come off and make an impact now and again, and I am not sure he is that player.”
Berahino is a talented young striker, but the 2015-16 campaign has not been great for him.
The former England Under-21 international has been able to score just four goals and has managed to create only 17 chances in 29 Premier League appearances so far this season.
The 22-year-old has a pass accuracy of 78% and a shot accuracy of 45%, and has won eight headers, 18 dribbles and 13 tackles.
Tottenham head coach Pochettino plays with one striker up front, and that is Harry Kane when the England international is fit or not rested.
It is hard to see the Argentine boss change his set-up next season just to accommodate Berahino in the starting lineup.
