Arsenal legend Ian Wright suggested on the BBC 606 5 live show on Sunday evening (April 24) that Aleksandar Mitrovic should be ahead of fellow striker Papiss Cisse in the Newcastle United pecking order.
The former Arsenal striker made the comments following Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool away from home in the Premier League at the weekend.
Senegal international striker Cisse started the game at Anfield on Saturday afternoon, while Mitrovic was on the substitutes’ bench.
The 21-year-old Serbia international striker replaced Cisse in the 75th minute of the encounter.
Wright believes that Mitrovic should be ahead of the former Metz man and cannot understand manager Rafael Benitez’s decision regarding the two strikers.
“I can’t understand how a manager of his obvious experience and knowhow can come in and see Mitrovic, who the fans totally respond to,” said the former England international on the BBC 606 5 live show on Sunday evening (April 24).
“He gets it. I saw him come on against Norwich and literally change that game. They were unlucky to lose that game, but why would you not play him? I cannot understand how Papiss Cisse plays in front of Mitrovic. I cannot understand it.”
Mitrovic has scored eight goals and created 25 chances in 31 Premier League appearances for Newcastle so far this season.
The youngster has a pass accuracy of 72% and a shot accuracy of 49%, and has won 70 headers, 16 dribbles and 12 tackles.
Cisse has scored three goals and created 10 chances in 19 Premier League matches for the Magpies so far this campaign.
The 30-year-old has a pass accuracy of 75% and a shot accuracy of 42%, and has won 23 headers, one dribble and seven tackles.
