Ter Stegen has been on the books of Barcelona since 2014 and has a contract until June 2019.
The 23-year-old goalkeeper is effectively the second-choice custodian at Barca and features mostly in cup matches.
The Germany international has featured in just four La Liga games for the Catalan giants so far this season and played in all 10 Champions League matches.
Balague has revealed that Ter Stegen is not happy at his lacking of playing time under Barcelona head coach Luis Enrique.
The Spanish football journalist told Sky Sports when ask about the speculation on the former Borussia Monchengladbach star’s future: “Ter Stegen wants to speak to the club at the end of the season and say to them: 'I'm not happy with this situation. I don't want to be No 2.’
“It is an interesting position that Luis Enrique finds himself in because he thinks Ter Stegen will become a better player - but the goalkeeper that guarantees him consistency is Claudio Bravo. A decision will have to be made by Enrique before Barcelona think of selling anyone.”
Good news for Liverpool?
Liverpool have been linked with a move for Ter Stegen in the summer transfer window, and Balague’s comments will encourage them.
Ter Stegen is a very good goalkeeper, and he showed his quality during his time at Monchengladbach.
If Barcelona boss Enrique is not willing to make the German the first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Claudio Bravo next season, then perhaps it would be best if he leaves Camp Nou in the summer transfer window.
Simon Mignolet is the current number one at Liverpool, but the 28-year-old goalkeeper is prone to making mistakes.
Ter Stegen would be an upgrade on Mignolet, and Liverpool should try to sign him in the summer transfer window.
