Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed a superb campaign to date.
Former Tottenham Hotspur star Graham Roberts has taken to Twitter to pick his Player of the Season and while there are plenty of worthy candidates he has named Toby Alderweireld as his standout performer.
The Belgian international arrived at White Hart Lane last summer and he quickly became an integral part of Mauricio Pochettino’s side, featuring 46 times in all competitions to date and developing excellent partnerships with both Jan Vertonghen and Kevin Wimmer.
Tottenham’s defensive solidity has been one of the main reasons why they have challenged for the Premier League this season, and while their 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion on Monday evening leaves them with a lot of work to do to catch leaders Leicester City, that should take nothing away from the efforts of the North London club.
Writing on social media after that match, Roberts said, “Player of the season toughest I have ever known. I would just about go for Toby Alderweireld. What a player, what an attitude, incredible season.”
While the 27-year-old got his vote, Roberts also reserved special praise for three other players who may not always get the plaudits they deserve; at least not from neutrals.
Roberts called Mousa Dembele the strongest midfielder on the ball in the league and he also hailed the superb work ethic of full-backs Kyle Walker and Danny Rose.
