Alan Shearer's verdict on Newcastle and Sunderland's survival chances

Alan Shearer

The pundit and former striker has been discussing Newcastle and Sunderland.

Alan Shearer believes it's been a good week for Newcastle United but feels Sunderland have been given a huge psychological boost now that they are outside the relegation zone, according to the Chronicle.

The former striker has been giving his verdict on the survival chances of the Tyne-Wear outfits.

And Shearer is quoted as telling Coral by the Chronicle: "It’s been a good week for Newcastle. First picking up a point against Manchester City in which it could have been all three and then they came from 2-0 down to draw with Liverpool at Anfield.

"Sunderland also picked up a point against Arsenal. I was impressed with the way they performed in that game. They are now outside the bottom three which psychologically is a big boost for them."

Sunderland certainly have the psychological and mathematical advantage right now. Norwich City are still in the equation, of course, but, if we were for a second to assume either the Black Cats or the Magpies will stay up, who has the better run-in?

Sunderland travel to Stoke City this weekend, before hosting Chelsea and Everton, then finishing their campaign at Watford. That's a good run-in.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have just the three games to go. They host Crystal Palace next - that could go either way - before what many would consider a gimme at Aston Villa.

On the final day of the campaign, Newcastle play host to Tottenham. That could decide everything, with some observers suggesting Spurs won't have anything to play for by then...
