Howard issue caused loss of faith in Martinez at Everton, says Thompson

The Blues boss is under increasing pressure at Goodison Park.

The decision to stick by goalkeeper Tim Howard saw Everton fans lose faith in Roberto Martinez, Phil Thompson has told Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, broadcast from 12pm on April 23.

The Blues boss is under increasing pressure at Goodison Park this season after a second successive disappointing campaign.

His side sit 11th in the Premier League table and they are unlikely to finish in the top 10; a position far below where many believe they should be.

Martinez has taken the brunt of the blame, with many of the fan base now calling for him to be sacked, and Thompson says the decision over Howard lost their faith.

“I tried to track it back and it was the Tim Howard position,” he told Soccer Saturday.

“You could see he was having such a difficult time and the confidence had gone out of the back four, but Roberto Martinez stuck by him.

“To me, Roberto sticking by him too long brought the pressure onto Howard, then onto Robles and the back four, and then particularly himself. The fans lost faith in him to make the right calls.”

There is no denying that the pressure is now firmly on Martinez as the Blues lose faith in his methods.

A FA Cup success potentially could have saved him but instead the last-minute loss to Manchester United has only added to the calls for him to leave.

And with the club eyeing a bright future following Farhad Moshiri’s investment, it will certainly be interesting to see if they believe that Martinez is a part of that or not.
