Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp has written in The Daily Mail that Everton need to sign a midfielder in the summer transfer window.
Redknapp has suggested that the Toffees cannot rely on midfielder Gareth Barry as he is 35 years of age.
The former England international has also suggested that Everton manager Roberto Martinez could get sacked as the fans are against him.
“The club face a huge dilemma as they decide whether to keep Martinez,” Redknapp wrote in The Daily Mail. “I like him but my worry is that few managers get the fans back onside once they have turned.
“They must also try to keep hold of key players like John Stones, Romelu Lukaku, James McCarthy and Ross Barkley.
"I think Stones will leave, and they will need to bolster their midfield as Gareth Barry isn't getting any younger. Whatever happens, Everton are facing their biggest summer for years.”
Martinez has come under pressure this season due to Everton’s disappointing performances and results in the Premier League.
The Merseyside outfit’s failure to progress to the final of the FA Cup is also going to increase the pressure on the Spaniard.
Everton have some talented young players, such as John Stones, Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley, but the question is whether they would be tempted to leave Goodison Park in the summer transfer window if they get good offers from bigger clubs.
The problem with sacking Martinez is finding the right manager who would be able to take the club to the next level.
