Jack Colback says he experienced worse situations than this with Sunderland

The 26-year-old Newcastle midfielder has been reflecting on past relegation battles at the Stadium of Light.

Newcastle United midfielder Jack Colback says he has experienced worse situations than his side's current battle against relegation at Sunderland, according to BBC Radio Newcastle.

Indeed, Sunderland remain locked in battle with Newcastle and Norwich City in the fight for survival.

But both Newcastle and Sunderland have been here many times before...

The 26-year-old told the BBC: "I've probably been in a worse situation with Sunderland a few years ago and we managed to get out of it," he added.

"All you can really do is keep believing."

Naturally, Colback wouldn't have wanted to be fighting relegation again when he swapped the Black Cats for the Magpies.

But the brutal truth has been that Newcastle have looked nearer to relegation over the past few years than anything else.

Sunderland hold all the cards as far as the relegation battle is concerned now that they are out of the danger zone. The margins, however, remain thin - and both Newcastle and Norwich can pile the pressure on with good results of their own.

Next up for Sunderland is a trip to Stoke. Newcastle host Crystal Palace, while Norwich travel to Arsenal.
