The Black Cats played out a goalless draw with Arsenal at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League.
Former Sunderland defender Bennett believes that Sam Allardyce’s side should have picked up all three points from the encounter.
"Sunderland had more than Arsenal over the 90 minutes,” Bennett told BBC Sport. “A lot of people might say a draw is a fair result but I think the home side edged it.
“A little bit of luck and they'd be coming away with three points, and that will give them belief for the rest of the season.”
Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, though, believes that his side deserved to win the Premier League match against Sunderland.
"When we watch the video back we will think we should have won,” the England international told BBC Sport (16:26).
“We were the better team and played some great stuff leading up to the final third but I think we should be more clinical.”
Over the course of the 90 minutes at the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon, hosts Sunderland had just 30% of the possession, took 12 shots of which just three were on target, and earned seven corners.
Visitors Arsenal had 70% of the possession, took 20 shots of which only seven were on target, and earned seven corners.
The result means that Sunderland are now out of the bottom three and in 17th spot in the Premier League table.
Meanwhile, the Gunners are fourth in the standings at the moment and are in danger of losing the final Champions League spot.
