Aston Villa may have lost once again yesterday, but Kevin Toner did at least manage to give their supporters some reason to feel positive.
Villa were beaten 4-2 by Southampton in their latest outing, and their performance in the contest drew further criticism.
The Claret and Blues showed moments of quality, but their defending was atrocious, as Ronald Koeman’s side claimed the three points.
Every goal Southampton scored with greeted with jeers from Villa fans, with the frustrations around the ground being very audible.
Toner’s display was a rare reason for optimism, though, with the young defender impressing on his first appearance for the Midlands club.
The 19-year-old came on at half-time in the match, replacing Micah Richards, and his passion caught the eye.
Villa players have been accused of not caring this season, but no such claims could have been made about Toner.
And Claret and Blues fans were quick to praise the academy-graduate on social media site Twitter after the match.
