Spain international De Gea proved exactly why he is so highly-rated after he put in a stunning performance during his side’s last-gasp 2-1 win over Everton in the FA Cup semi-final.
After playing a large part in helping United reach the semi-finals, the former Atletico Madrid man pulled off a number of top class saves and denied Romelu Lukaku from the penalty spot en-route to victory.
The Red Devils wouldn’t be in the position they find themselves in without the shot-stopper, and Shearer believes he alongside Tottenham’s Lloris are the best two in the top-flight.
"The best two keepers in league are David De Gea and Hugo Lloris. De Gea has kept United in games this season. In the replay against West Ham, it wasn’t until the last few minutes but West Ham tested him and they couldn’t beat him. He’s been fabulous,” Shearer told the BBC.
There are a number of world class shot-stoppers in the Premier League, with Joe Hart, Petr Cech and Thibaut Courtois all demonstrating one more than one occasion how good they are.
Yet having said that, not many could argue with Shearer’s assessment as both De Gea and Lloris have arguably been as important if not more than any other player during their respective teams’ campaigns.
Lloris has kept an abundance of clean sheets for Spurs as the North London club bid to win the title, while United are largely indebted to their number one for presenting them with a shot of winning the FA Cup.
