The Villa owner sent a message to the club's fans this week.
The Villans owner sent a message to the club’s fan base this week, insisting that the problems currently enveloping the club should rest firmly on his shoulders.
It was an odd move from Lerner, with both pundits and fans questioning both the timing and content of the statement.
Merson though, says that there was an ulterior motive to the situation and the American has said it to try and ensure that prospective buyers will not be turned away from the club.
“From a distance, I think that is him saying “the club is not in disarray, it’s me,” he told Soccer Saturday.
“He’s just covering his back and ensuring he can sell that club for as much as he can. If you were [interested in] buying it now, well you wouldn’t.”
Aston Villa fans will certainly be hoping that anyone interested in the club can come in and save them sooner rather than later.
Things have become dire under Lerner over the last few years as he has lost interest, with his clear desire to sell up having been one factor that has led to the situation they find themselves in.
Next season is being anticipated as one that could be a struggle for them, but starting with a new owner could be the first step on the road to recovery.
