Everton boss Roberto Martinez in trouble after FA Cup loss, says Alan Shearer

The Blues were beaten by a last minute winner in the semi final with Manchester United.

Everton’s FA Cup semi final loss to Manchester United will spell trouble for manager Roberto Martinez, Alan Shearer has told BBC Sport.

The Blues were heartbroken on Saturday afternoon as a late goal from Antony Martial saw United into the final and ended a spirited fight back from Roberto Martinez’s team.

Attention now turns to the Catalan’s future at the club, with him firmly under pressure after a second successive dire campaign from his side.

Many of the club’s fans are calling for him to be sacked as a result, and this result will not have done him any favours, despite the positive second half showing.

And Shearer believes that the result means trouble for his future at the club.

“Trouble,” was the one word answer Shearer gave when asked about what the result means for the Catalan on BBC Sport

“He was struggling for performances and results in the league but this would have rescued him. An FA Cup and mid table would have been acceptable.”

“Finishing wise has cost him today, they created so many chances in the second half. We mentioned Lukaku, but it wasn’t his day.”

It will certainly be interesting to see if Martinez will be given the time to turn things around at Everton now.

His future very much rested on the FA Cup, with some believing that winning the competition could have saved him.

With that off the table now though, the season must be viewed as a failure overall and Martinez will surely take much of the blame.
