Arsene Wenger admits his surprise at Ozil exclusion from PFA Team

The Arsenal star was a surprising absentee despite being named on the PFA Player of the Year list.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted his surprise that Mesut Ozil was not named in the PFA Team of the Year, to the club’s official website.

The German was a surprising absentee from the team named by his fellow professionals this week, despite an impressive campaign.

He has managed six goals and a mammoth 18 assists so far, and has been named on the six man PFA Player of the Year shortlist as a result.

In fact, he is the only man on that list not to feature in the team, and Wenger has admitted he cannot understand how his star man has been left out.

“It’s a surprise for me,” he told

“I cannot explain it, because it’s the players who vote. I don’t know why they did not pick him.”

“Yeah [he deserves to be in the team]. When you are top of the assists, usually that’s a sign of quality that should get you a place in a top team."

Ozil’s absence is something of a snub from his fellow professionals given how well he has played this season.

However, it is also not surprising to see him missing out, with the efforts from the Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur stars who make the team arguably more notable than his.

The former Real Madrid man has certainly been impressive though, and there’s no denying that any other year would see him make it into the team comfortably.
