Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Michael Owen being named international ambassador

Owen Man United

Liverpool may have made an unpopular appointment, due to Owen's spell with Manchester United...

Michael Owen would love to be remembered at Liverpool for this...

But unfortunately memories of his trophy success under Gerard Houllier at the club were left tainted when he joined Manchester United as a free agent in 2009.

Liverpool fans subsequently remember this...

So when Liverpool announced yesterday via their official website that Owen has been named as the club's international ambassador, it was met with displeasure from fans.

Owen is the first player to be named in such a role, and while it ultimately means little, choosing another ex-Red who has not played for Manchester United would have been less controversial.

The former England international retired early into his 30s after a succession of injuries and a non-descript spell at Stoke City.

He is now a pundit for BT Sport and co-commentator, and Liverpool fans might be hearing a bit more from him in the future.

The news did not go down well, here is a look at the reaction on Twitter...
