Everton veteran Steve Pienaar admits desire to play in South Africa

Pienaar Everton

The Everton star is out of contract this summer.

This summer could see plenty of players on their way out at Everton. The club have plenty of players whose contracts expire at the end of the season. Darron Gibson, Leon Osman and Steven Pienaar are all out of contract in the summer.

Pienaar is one who looks likely to leave. Once a pivotal member of the Everton squad he has struggled in recent times with a string of injury concerns. When he came on for Everton in the Merseyside derby recently he looked shockingly off the pace and the writing seems to be on the wall.

Now it is being reported that Pienaar is open to the possibility of a return to his South African homeland.

Soccer Laduma reports that Pienaar is open to a move back to South Africa in the summer.

The Everton player himself told the South African website earlier this week that he would love a move back to South Africa and would love to play in a Soweto derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs:

“Yeah, that would be a dream come true.

“A lot of players want to play in the derby as it is a big stage. Those are the games why you play football... to play in front of a lot of people and show your talent.

“Like I said, if any of the clubs would give me the opportunity, I would love to play in South Africa.”

Pienaar has not played in South Africa since leaving Ajax Cape Town in 2001 and has 61 caps for his nation.

With opportunities to remain in Europe likely to be scarce it would certainly be a great move for Pienaar, if one of South Africa’s big clubs can find a way to afford him.
