Everton have been in the news this week and not for good reason. The club were put to the sword by local rivals Liverpool in midweek and the manner of their defeat has many an Everton fan wondering if time has finally run out on Roberto Martinez’s stint at the club.
The club do however have a FA Cup semi-final to think about tomorrow evening and could still finish in the top half of the table this term. Add that to a Capital One Cup semi-final and there is no doubt that Everton’s season has not been as disastrous as many might make out.
In the summer one key for Everton will be holding on to their star players. The trio of John Stones, Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku in particular are three players that are likely to come under the radar this summer.
But former Everton defender David Weir told talkSPORT today (22/04/16) of his belief that the trio should stay at the club – as long as success follows:
“Why would they go?
“I think if Everton are competing at the level they want to compete why would you want to leave Everton?
“So they go hand-in-hand. If Everton are successful and doing well then people don’t want to leave there.
“It’s a fantastic club, with fantastic support.”
Everton fans are mainly frustrated at the performances of the team because of the talent available to Martinez.
But Stones and Barkley in particular have been going backwards under the Spaniard in 2016 and Lukaku cuts a dispirited figure.
So whilst Weir might hope all three stay, that is starting to look less and less likely.
