Vurnon Anita admits Benitez has not changed anything fundamental at Newcastle

St James Park Two

Newcastle United are fighting for their top-flight future.

Newcastle United midfielder Vurnon Anita has been speaking to Sky Sports about the impact of recently appointed manager Rafa Benitez.

The Spaniard arrived at St James’ Park as a replacement for the much maligned Steve McClaren and while he has only overseen one victory so far, the Magpies have picked up four points from their last two matches as they bid to remain in the top flight.

Newcastle are currently 19th in the Premier League with four matches remaining and with a two-point gap between them and 17th-placed Norwich City it could go down to the wire.

After Newcastle’s victory against Swansea City and their draw against Manchester City, Anita was asked if Benitez has done anything fundamentally different since arriving and there was a somewhat surprising response.

“Not really, he’s just been very clear and everybody knows he’s been at big clubs and he knows what he is talking about,” Anita told Sky Sports. “But it is up to the players to show it on the pitch and we did.”

The fact that Benitez has been there and done that will certainly ensure the respect of his players; something McClaren may have struggled with as he attempted to get the best out of his under-performing squad.
